Operation of electric scooters in Dubai are back on track

Electric Scooters in Dubai
RTA, Dubai Police have announced the start of electric scooters on permitted cycling tracks

Effective 13th April, the operation of electric scooters will commence on permitted cycling tracks. The RTA and Dubai Police have announced 10 districts across Dubai.

The step is taken in line with Resolution Number 13 for 2022, endorsed by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Chairman of the Executive Council, regulating the use of scooters in Dubai.

It supports the efforts to make Dubai a bicycle-friendly city. The initial phase covers the below areas

  • Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard
  • Jumeirah Lake Towers
  • Dubai Internet City
  • Al Rigga
  • 02nd of December Street
  • The Palm Jumeirah
  • City Walk
  • Safe roads and tracks within specific zones at Al Quasis, Al Mankool and Al Karama

This is in addition to the 167 km long tracks designated for bicycles and scooters across Dubai. It excludes the cycling tracks  at Saih Assalam, Al Qudra and Meydan.

The decision to select these districts was guided by specific criteria such as

  • High population density
  • Special development areas
  • Areas served by public transport and metro stations
  • Availability of integrated infrastructure
  • Areas with high level of traffic safety

Permits to ride e-scooters can be applied on www.rta.ae. This is for free and RTA will launch this by month end. The process involves attending training courses and passing an online test.

RTA called on cyclists to park the shared electric scooters of operators in the designated parking spaces only. Parked scooters should not block the movement of traffic and pedestrians or the use of public parking.

A fine of AED 200 will be issued if the bike or e-scooter is found in any other place than the designated parking space. It may obstruct the movement of pedestrians, vehicles or pose risk to road users.
